Quedar – verbo intransitivo

This is a very complex verb to explain and I don’t think there are any literary and straight translation into English therefore I will give you the Spanish definitions and provide you with different examples.

Spanish:

Estar, detenerse forzosa o voluntariamente en un lugar.

Subsistir, permanecer o restar parte de algo.

Dicho de una persona: Ganarse cierta fama o representación, merecida o inmerecida, como resultado de su comportamiento o de las circunstancias.

Dicho de una persona o de una cosa: Permanecer en su estado, o pasar a otro más o menos estable.

Cesar, terminar, acabar.

Ponerse de acuerdo, convenir en algo.

Concertar una cita.

Engañar a alguien o abusar diestramente de su credulidad.

Examples :

Quedar viudo/huérfano –  to be widowed/orphaned.

el coche quedó como nuevo –  the car is as good as new (now).

quedé muy bien con el regalo  - I made a very good.

¿queda alguien adentro? – is there anyone left inside?

le quedó la cicatriz  - she was left with a scar.

[tamaño/talla]: me queda largo –  it’s too long for me.
la talla 12 le queda bien –  the size 12 fits (you/him) fine

¿a qué hora quedamos? –  what time shall we meet?
Quedé con unos amigos para cenar  - I arranged to meet.
