English: Outstanding, most significant, important, excellent, understudy, reserve bullfighter, in education this is the equivalent of the qualification “A”

Spanish: Alguien que sobre sale en algo. En educación, calificación máxima que viene después al notable. En comediantes y toreros especialmente la persona que suplente.

Examples: Saqué un  sobresaliente en el examen de Español. Aunque él no es un sobresaliente en el colegio, es un gran deportista.
